Professor John Nolan
Professor John Nolan is the Founder and Principal Investigator of the Nutrition Research Centre Ireland (NRCI).
His research group studies the role of nutrition for vision and the prevention of blindness and, more recently, the role of nutrition in brain health and cognitive function.
In 2011, he won a European Research Council (ERC) research grant to study the impact of nutritional supplementation on visual function (CREST 281096).
The central retinal enrichment supplementation trials (CREST)
identified how targeted supplementation can improve visual function for the general population, and for patients with
age-related macular degeneration (AMD).
He has published 98 peer-reviewed scientific papers (3776 citations; H-index =
38). He is currently the editor of the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease, Investigative Ophthalmology and Visual Science and
the European Journal of Ophthalmology.
